Heroic, Cloud9 top groups in Toronto

In Group D of Northern Arena, Heroic have advanced to playoffs from first place following a 16-14 win on Train versus Selfless, while Winterfox survived the elimination match against Splyce (2-1; Overpass 9-16, Mirage 16-8, Cache 16-6). Group C saw Cloud9 emerge victorious from the winners' match against Rogue (16-9 on Mirage).

After the re-scheduled matches of Group A and B came to an end, it was time for Northern Arena to return to group D, where Selfless faced one of the few European teams in the competition, HEROIC.

The two teams ended up on Train and it was Noah "Nifty" Francis's team who got off on the right foot, leading 5-0 as Terrorists before the Danish-Swedish roster replied with six rounds in a row. Selfless picked up the remaining four rounds however, securing a solid 9-6 lead.

They extended their lead to 12 rounds on the back of a flawless B bombsite retake in the pistol round. HEROIC didn't take long to stabilize after Valdemar "valde" Bjørn Vangså saved a 1v3 attempt from Mitch "mitch" Semago and made it 12-12 when Marco "Snappi" Pfeiffer clutched a 1v3 of his own due to a smartly placed molotov.

The remainder of the match was a back-and-forth battle, which ended in the very last round of regulation, as HEROIC won a desperate Tec-9 forcebuy for 16-14, grabbing first place in Group D.

The elimination match of the same group kicked off at the same time. The first half of map one, Overpass, was a back-and-forth battle which ended with Winterfox picking up a close 8-7 lead as Counter-Terrorists.

When the sides switched, it was quite a one-sided affair. Splyce took over the map starting with the second pistol round, as Joey "CRUC1AL" Steusel led the defence with at least one frag in nearly every won round, including a few opening kills, for a 16-9 scoreline.

Mirage followed with the Australians managing nine rounds on the Terrorist side with Chris "emagine" Rowlands and Mike "ap0c" Aliferis spearheading the offence despite CRUC1AL's heroic performance.

The Dutchman continued to do well on the second side, but so did emagine who had significantly more help from his team, evening the series at 16-8 shortly after Chris "ofnu" Hanley came out on top of a 1v3 afterplant clutch.

The whole Winterfox team showed up to play on the decider, Cache, while no one did on Splyce's side - the Australians decimated their opponents as Counter-Terrorists with 13 rounds to two. It was only a matter of time before they secured their place in the deciding match versus Selfless, as Splyce had little room to breathe and got eliminated at 6-16.

Cloud9 then played their winners' match on Mirage and put up a commanding defence worthy of 12 rounds. Rogue on the other hand were a one-man army consisting of Nicolai "glace" Jensen while the remainder lagged behind significantly in the fragging department.

They attempted to come back on their own CT side, winning the second round's forcebuy after falling short in the pistol, but they had too little room for error. Cloud9 finished first in the group with a comfortable 16-9 scoreline, further cementing their place as one of the favourites earned thanks to their formidable run online.
